Report: Russia's car sales down 34% on year in Jan–Feb
MOSCOW, Mar 9 (PRIME-TASS) -- Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in Russia fell 34% on the year to 165,862 units in January–February, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) said in a press release Tuesday.
In February, the sales dropped 32% to 91,922 units.
Martin Jahn, the deputy chairman of the automobile manufacturers committee at the AEB, said the AEB hoped the government’s “cash for clunkers” program, launched on Monday, will revive sales, which, unlike the economy, haven’t recovered from the economic crisis.
Russia’s largest car manufacturer AvtoVAZ sold 37,455 Lada automobiles in January–February, down 36% on the year, while sales of automaker GAZ decreased 7% on the year to 6,417 units in the period.
Among foreign-branded vehicles, sales of Hyundai fell 22% on the year to 11,821 units in January–February, sales of Chevrolet went down 47% on the year to 11,169 units, sales of Kia rose 27% to 10,580 units, sales of Renault decreased 2% to 8,505 units, sales of Ford were down 60% to 7,376 units, and sales of Toyota fell 47% to 7,365 units.
